How do I apply overhead, profit, contingency, and tax to a BOQ?
The "Markups & totals" panel, and how the grand total is actually calculated.
Markups sit on top of your BOQ's direct cost (the sum of every position) and turn it into a grand total. They live in one place: the “Markups & totals” panel alongside the BOQ.
- Open the “Markups & totals” panel.
- Enter percentages for Overhead %, Profit %, Contingency %, and Tax %.
- Click “Save markups.”
Below the input fields, the panel shows the actual breakdown as you save it: Subtotal (direct cost), then each markup amount, then the Grand total — so the calculation is visible, not a number that just appears.
Applied the same way every time
This is the specific thing a spreadsheet markup formula tends to get inconsistent across revisions or between estimators. In Buildiante the four percentages are the only inputs, and the calculation from subtotal to grand total is deterministic — the same BOQ with the same markups always produces the same total, regardless of who saved it or when.
Markup fields are disabled once the BOQ leaves an editable state — see the approval lifecycle.
